European Colonization of Africa

This data visualization was designed to depict the trends of European colonization of Africa. My first goal was to shed light on trends exhibited within each colonizing power by using color and time-based organization. The second goal was to make trends amongst colonizing powers apparent through the use of time-based organization (descending order from earliest to latest date of colonization). The third goal was to create context for certain colonial trends (ex. for Germany and Italy) through the inclusion of World War 1 and 2. Finally, I included a map that allows the audience to visually discern trends in geographical colonization, and gain a better understanding of how European powers strategically approached their colonization process over 200 years.
